The Muncie 4-speed transmission is a manual gearbox that's popular with Chevrolet muscle car enthusiasts. It was first introduced in 1963 in Chevrolet's full-size cars and Corvettes. General Motors equipped many of their muscle cars from 1963–1975 with the Muncie 4-speed transmission.
The Muncie 4-speed is a constant-mesh transmission, which means that all the gears are always meshed together and spinning, even in neutral. When shifting, a particular-speed gear is locked to the mainshaft.
The Muncie 4-speed comes in three basic models: M-20, M-21, and M-22. The M-20 is a wide-ratio transmission intended for basic street drive-ability and cruising. The first models have a 2.56:1 first gear, while later units have a 2.52:1 first gear. The M23 is the strongest Muncie style 4-speed available.
The Muncie 4-speed is easily adaptable for a wide range of GM and other non-GM vehicles.
When buying a used Muncie 4-speed, you should inspect it and replace or reuse as per the manual. The main thing is to replace the brass cone rings, which is the wear part. You should also look for excessive wear or broken ends on the synchronizer teeth on the end of each gear. A minimum new parts list is synchronizer rings and a gasket set.
