  • Overview:
The NV4500 is a heavy-duty 5-speed manual transmission built by New Venture Gear, renowned for its strength and versatility
in light-duty trucks, particularly Dodge and GM pickups.
  • Year Models:
Introduced in 1992 for General Motors (GM) trucks (RPO code MT8).
Adopted by Dodge in 1995 for Ram pickups, notably with Cummins diesel and V10 engines.
Used in GM trucks from 1992 to 2007 (final year in Chevy Silverado Classic and GMC Sierra Classic).
Dodge production ran from 1995 to 2005, phasing out with the rise of the NV5600.
Early GM models (1992-1994) featured a 6.34:1 first gear; later models (1995+) and all Dodge versions shifted to 5.61:1.
  • Durability:
Rated for up to 460 lb-ft of torque stock, though real-world use suggests it can handle up to 600 lb-ft with care.
Cast iron case with an aluminum top cover provides robust construction for towing and off-road demands.
Known for longevity in moderate applications, often exceeding 200,000 miles with proper maintenance.
Weak point: Dodge versions prone to 5th gear nut backing off under heavy load—mitigated in remanufactured units with
upgraded main shafts and locknuts. Less durable under extreme horsepower (beyond 275 hp/600 lb-ft) without upgrades, as
bearings and synchronizers wear faster.
  • Key Features:
Gear ratios: Early GM (6.34:1 1st, 0.73:1 5th), later GM/Dodge (5.61:1 1st, 0.74-0.75:1 5th), reverse 5.04:1 post-1998.
Fully synchronized forward gears; reverse synchronized in Dodge and later GM models (1999+).
  • Weighs
approximately 195 lbs, balancing strength and manageable size.
Dual PTO ports for auxiliary equipment, ideal for work trucks.
Applications:
Common in 1994-2003
