  • The transfer cases on these 48RE's are very heavy and the strain OD housing can
    cause the housing to crack in the area were in bolts to the case.
  • If your OD housing is broken in the rear half area you most likely have a driveline vibration
    of some kind that will break any new again if you don't fix it.
  • Also if transmission is put into park while rolling the parking pawl pivot point
    can crack the housing in the same area.
  • Not recommended to reuse the output bearing snap ring as they are usually woren

Chrysler used the 46RE, also called the A518, from 1988 until 2003. This transmission found its way into every Dodge light-duty truck and van application, as well as the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was succeeded by the 47RE, which used a few beefed-up components and a larger torque converter. Along with light-duty applications, it was used in Cummins-powered trucks.
